If your future self could call you today, what advice would they give to help you create the life they now enjoy?

Future You Wants a Word

September 07, 20264 min read

I'm You From 2045. We Need to Talk.

Hi.

It's me.

You.

Well, technically, it's you from twenty years in the future.

I know this is a little weird.

Trust me, I thought so too.

But after watching you hit snooze three times this morning, eat lunch at your desk, and tell yourself you'll "start taking care of yourself next Monday," I figured we should have a conversation.

Don't panic. I'm not here to yell at you. I'm not here to tell you to give up pizza, and I'm definitely not here to convince you to spend two hours a day at the gym.

I'm just here to tell you what happened….and what almost happened.

First, The Good News

You made it.

You're here.

You're alive.

You're still laughing.

You still love your family.

You still roll your eyes at technology.

And somehow, despite all the advances in the future, people are still arguing on social media.

Some things never change.

But there are some differences too.

You know that trip you've always wanted to take?

You took it.

You know those memories you hoped to make with your kids and grandkids?

You made those too.

You know all those moments you worried you might miss?

You didn't.

And I'd like to thank you for that.

You Know What Made the Difference?

It wasn't one huge decision.

It wasn't some magical diet.

It wasn't a fitness challenge.

It wasn't a New Year's resolution.

It was all the small things you almost didn't do.

The walks.

The stretches.

The strength exercises.

The times you parked a little farther away.

The moments you got up and moved instead of staying on the couch.

The days you didn't feel like doing it but did it anyway.

None of those things felt important at the time.

But they added up.

More than you realized.

Let Me Tell You About the Alternate Version

There was another possible future.

A version where you kept putting things off.

A version where every ache and pain became a reason to move less.

A version where getting stronger always started "next month."

In that version, life got smaller.

Stairs became harder.

Travel became more stressful.

Simple tasks required more effort.

The world slowly shrank because moving through it became more difficult.

Thankfully, that's not the version I'm living.

And that's because of choices you're making right now.

Here's Something Nobody Tells You

The goal was never to look twenty-five forever.

Thank goodness.

That sounds exhausting.

The goal was never perfection.

The goal was never fitting into a certain size.

The goal was function.

The ability to do what you wanted to do when you wanted to do it.

To travel.

To carry groceries.

To get down on the floor.

To get back up again.

To keep your independence.

To keep saying yes to opportunities.

That's what mattered.

And that's what still matters.

Also, We Need to Discuss Your Knees

They're doing okay.

But they'd like to thank you for eventually realizing that strength training was not, in fact, a punishment.

The muscles around your knees became stronger.

Your balance improved.

Your confidence improved.

And surprisingly, moving more actually made many things hurt less.

Who knew?

Well, your occupational therapist knew.

But you took a while to believe her.

One More Thing

You spend a lot of time worrying about whether you're doing enough.

You compare yourself to people online.

You think everyone else has it figured out.

They don't.

Most people are just trying their best.

Just like you.

The people who age well aren't necessarily the people who were perfect.

They're the people who stayed consistent.

They kept showing up.

They kept moving.

They kept trying.

Even when life got busy.

Even when they didn't feel motivated.

Even when progress felt slow.

So Here's My Request

Don't do it for the scale.

Don't do it because somebody on the internet told you to.

Don't do it because you think you should look different.

Do it for me.

Do it for the version of you that's still traveling, laughing, gardening, playing with your family, walking through stores without needing to sit down, and living life on your own terms.

Every walk you take today helps me.

Every strength exercise helps me.

Every healthy choice helps me.

You don't have to be perfect.

You just have to keep moving forward.

See You in 2045

I won't spoil everything.

Some surprises are worth waiting for.

But I will leave you with this:

The future isn't built by one giant decision.

It's built by thousands of tiny choices that seem insignificant at the time.

Take the walk.

Do the stretch.

Try the exercise.

Give yourself some grace….a lot of grace

Your future self is counting on you.

And trust me.

I'm worth it.

Sincerely,

Future You
